“Ten Pounds Less Next Time.”
We scheduled it early, before the rush, before the other barbers and customers arrived.
Just the shop waking up.
The pool table off to the side was already set, cues lined up for whoever might have to wait later.
In the background, With a Little Help from My Friends by The Beatles played as I took off my coat and walked over to the chair….
We spoke about our concerns and about staying grounded. Keeping active and vocal. Tranquilos y activos.
About grown children finding their way in the world.
I appreciated how he spoke in metaphors.
He shared with an embarrassed laugh how sometimes he can talk someone off a bridge…but still struggle to motivate himself to cross the street.
We talked about staying healthy and eating better in a world built around fast, oversized servings.
I shared that I walk five to six miles a day and keep a simple push-up routine to stay in shape, a personal strategy that works for me.
Well wishes were exchanged as i paid for the cut and straight-razor shave.
As I stepped out into the cold, he said:
“Ten pounds less next time.”
No strain. No pressure. Con determinación.
Just a man naming a future version of himself. out loud, to another man.
