Tláloc

If you ever come over to the house, you might ask about him.

“Who’s that?”

“That’s Tláloc.”

He came home with me from Tzintzuntzan, Michoacán.

Or maybe I should say… I came home with him.

I didn’t exactly find him.

Maybe he found me.

There was something about him that made me stop. I wasn’t looking to buy anything that day. But I kept coming back to him until I finally realized he was making the trip north with me.

So for more than 2,200 miles, Tláloc rode in the back of the SUV as I drove from central Mexico to our home in Michigan.

Now he stands at the edge towards our wooded acreage.

Every morning we see him, and every morning he quietly reminds me of querido México. Our casa y terreno en Guanajuato. Familia. Nuestra historia. Otro ritmo.

The part of me that is always present.

Sometimes we think we’re the ones choosing what comes home with us.

In terms of Tlàloc, I’m not so sure.
