Even a ‘no’ can move you closer to your next at-bat.

In baseball, you don’t control the pitch—you only control your swing.

Recently, I had the chance to share a coaching proposal with a Major League Baseball team—a first in my 5-year practice. They went with another partner this time, but my contact told me I’m now on her “list of Executive Coaches when another opportunity arises.”

It reminded me of something true for all of us: every opportunity, whether it ends in a win or not, is a chance to refine how we show up. It’s the practice swings that prepare us for the next one.

Just like players such as Joe Smith, who built a 16-year career across nine MLB teams, showing up again and again with consistency and humility on and off the plate.

Success often isn’t one big swing, but the presence we bring every time we step to the plate.

That’s what coaching is about for me: walking beside leaders, staff, and players—especially LatAm and Hispanic professionals—as they carry both performance and cultural dynamics on their shoulders.

So here’s the reminder for all of us: keep taking your swings and show the value you have to offer.

I’m curious—when an opportunity doesn’t connect, how have you prepared for the next at-bat?
