More important than money, titles, and status is a friendship that lifts you when times are tough, that encourages you to share whatever is on your mind and be heard, and fosters maturity and safety.
In the picture is one of my Compadres, Fernando. (My wife and I are communion godparents to his and our Comadre’s youngest daughter.)
Fernando and I share such a grounding friendship.
On Mexican Independence eve, we road the awe-inspiring and rugged sierra mountains near Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico.
Over 50 miles of dual-sport riding on dirt and gravel roads. Seeing mountain ranges, valleys, pueblos, and ranchos. Feeling the temperature shifts between altitudes. Hearing the engines roar through our helmets. Smelling the greenery and exhaust through the mountains. Feeding our hunger with homemade tacos from a storefront stand whenever we got hungry.
Being present and together on those winding roads where adventure and judgment met and enabled us to open it up on the straightaways at top gear.
Later in the evening, we toasted to our personal and professional lives, the triumphs and challenges, with mezcal and grounding conversations.
We have one another’s back, can count on each other at anytime and for anything.
We believe in and are rooting for one another.
May you have and build such a solid relationship with your Compadre or friend.
A relationship that welcomes you as you are and challenges you to be better.
