Asking for a Favor, Asking for Help

Normally I don’t ask for help even if I may need it or make life easier. Call it stubborn or something else. I just don’t.

Throughout life I learned to aguantarme y salir adelante, which usually meant an individual effort.

On Labor Day I needed to drive a 5 hour distance to accompany a good friend whose mom had passed. The wake was until noon followed by the service and burial. It was in rural Illinois not conveniently close to a major airport.

I was intent on driving out very early to make it there before noon, and driving back that same day.  Getting out the evening before was not going to work.

My wife, who’s in FL caring for the in-laws, suggested I ask my son’s friend, who has a plane, if he could fly me down and back.

It was an inherent labor to ask. But I did and he readily answered yes.

By sunset on Labor Day, I was driving back home from the airport hangar after having accompanied my buddy and his family. It was a beautiful and serene view from above on the way there and back.

I’m glad I stepped outside of myself by asking a friend if they could fly me down.

As Hispanos, we need to ask for help when we need it. No somos una molestia. It’s something we need to do more often.
