A More Deliberate Día de Dar Gracias

With el Día de Dar Gracias two days away, I’m being more deliberate about the upcoming day.
I feel most at peace when I’m around kind and courageous people, who are clear in what they believe, and brave enough to stay human in a world that can feel and is very hard.
This year, we’ve opened our table
to those who don’t have a place to be with others along with our longstanding, traditional guests.
It feels right to make room for people who carry a caring spirit with those in kind.
At the same time, we’re choosing not to share a table with some in our own comunidad, even fellow Hispanics, who support cruel policies and administrations
that strip others of safety and basic respect.
No hatred.
No shouting matches.
Just a clear decision that reflects who we are and what we believe in.
I can’t fix the world.
But I can choose the spirit of the home we host in, and the people I break bread with.
Gratitud. Valentía. Cariño. Cuidado. Esperanza.
That’s how I’m being thankful this year.
