A pressing quehacer while in Mexico this past week was to remeasure the boundaries of our property and home.
We had an ingeniero conduct a boundary survey of the property lines for some planned improvements. Turns out his parents knew my grandparents and tíos, so we immediately connected.
A boundary survey might be akin to assessing our personal boundaries to ensure that where we begin and end are clearly defined.
This self-assessment may help us to:
* Be clear about who we are, independent of the women and men in our lives, including our wives, partners, and even parents.
* Help us to understand our true motivations involving career, partner choice, and key decisions.
* Determine when others around us, acquaintances, friends, and loved ones cross our personal boundaries and ignore who we are, and discredit our thoughts, and decisions.
* Guide ourselves to see the dynamics of our key relationships (professional and personal) which can give us the clarity and compass to end the relationship, if our personal boundaries are not respected. That’s right, end the relationship.
As men, we need to know where we begin independent of the world around us and key relationships we are in. To be connected with our innate personhood, purpose, and direction.
This self-understanding enables us to be our true selves, connected to our core identity and integrity, to make possible personal development and improvements.
This self-awareness makes the differentiating impact for ourselves, and to those that respect us and love us where we begin and end and can grow into.
